Anna Lena Zahn, E1

Three months in Canada

I have
been fascinated by Canada for a long time. When I received the acceptance
letter, I was super happy. Even though I was excited about going to Canada, I
had a few little worries about staying abroad. My biggest one, being without my
family for such a long time. Before my departure, I had already skyped with my
exchange partner and her family a few times, just to get to know them a bit and
to clarify some questions. Once I even skyped with my exchange partner and a
friend of hers and I had a really good feeling since the beginning.

And
finally, the day I had been looking forward to for such a long time arrived. We
all met at the airport in Frankfurt and that’s where our trip started. The
flight was long, but the other Germans in the group made it entertaining
and interesting. The only downside was that the layover in Calgary was a bit
tiring. My host mother and my exchange partner were waiting for me at the
airport in Edmonton to pick me up. We drove back home and talked a lot. The
first impression was really good. They still had summer break in Canada. The
next day, after only one night at my new home, we drove to Jasper, where the
rest of the family was already waiting for us. I spent my first week in Canada
in Jasper with my host parents, my host sister, brother and my exchange partner
as well as their two dogs. We had a great time in the national park. Not only
did we do many fun things like canoeing and going to the hot springs, but it
was also a good way to get to know all of them better. In addition, the nature
in Jasper is really impressive and I am happy that I got to see so many
beautiful places within my first week in Canada.

When
we came back from Jasper, Hannah and I had to go to a meeting with all the
others who took part in the exchange and went to our school. That was the first
time that I saw the school building as well as some of the teachers. We talked
about our timetables and discussed which classes we would like to take.

Afterwards,
it didn’t take long until my first day of school came. School started at 8.30
am and we had 4 blocks of 72 minutes per day. At 11.00 am we had a lunch break
for one hour. My first block was French, which I had together with Hannah.
Afterwards, I had leadership, a class we don’t have in Germany. Then, we had
lunch break which I either spent with Hannah and her friend or with other
people I got to know. I usually stayed at school but sometimes we also went out
for lunch and drove to a fast food restaurant. After lunch, I had gym class,
which probably was my favourite class since I had it with many people I really
liked. My fourth block was either English or Social class, which alternated
every day. I didn’t have any problems to find my rooms since they were all on
the same floor except when I had gym class, which was in the gym of course. The
first day of school was also the day when the volleyball tryouts started, so
when classes were done, I went to the gym again. During the next few days, I
got to know more and more people and it was quite easy to get used to all the
new things. I made it onto the volleyball team, so I had practice every day
after school. A few weeks into the semester, the volleyball season started, which
meant that I also had one or two games per week. Playing volleyball in Canada
was really a lot of fun and it was a great opportunity to meet some more
people. My whole team was very nice and I enjoyed playing with them.

There
are a lot of differences between my school in Germany and the SGCHS, the school
I attended during my stay in Canada. Not only the whole school system is
different but we don’t have school sports teams either. In addition, the German
“Gymnasium” goes from grade 5-13 while the Canadian high school only goes from
grade 10-12. I usually didn’t get a lot of homework, therefore we wrote more
small tests. The tests were either written exams or multiple choice tests and I
usually did quite well. In general, I thought that everything was less strict
in Canada at school and I also found it a bit easier. It was cool to experience
the school spirit at the high school and I liked going to school.

During
my stay in Canada, I did some more fun trips. Near the beginning of my stay, we
went to the Adventure camp in Nordegg with all the other Germans who took part
in the exchange. That was a great experience since we did a lot of exciting
things like rappelling, climbing or canoeing and it was good to spend some time
with all of them. A bit further into the exchange, I drove to Jasper again.
This time, with two friends of mine and we had a great time. Another place I
went to was Drumheller, which is further south in Alberta. Its landscape is
really different from the ones I saw in the Rocky Mountains, so that was very
interesting too. I also went to an Edmonton Oilers ice hockey game as well as a
Drake concert.

One
week before I flew back to Germany, my host family surprised me by telling me
that we were driving to the Rocky Mountains again, this time to Banff to go
skiing. I was super excited and it was probably the best trip since I really
like skiing and it was a lot of fun.

All
in all, spending three months in Canada was one of the best decisions I made
and an amazing opportunity. I really enjoyed the time and I’m grateful for it.
I am also happy that I made so many new friends and I hope to stay in touch
with them. Now, my whole family is looking forward to having my exchange
partner with us in Germany for three months.
